What is COB LED technology?

COB stands for 'Chip on Board', which is a specific LED packaging technology that directly fixing and welding multiple LED bare chips on the PCB (printed circuit board), and then covering the protective chips with encapsulation glue.

COB stands for 'Chip on Board', which is a specific LED packaging technology that directly fixing and welding multiple LED bare chips on the PCB (printed circuit board) substrate, and then covering the protective chips with encapsulation glue (such as silicone, epoxy resin),  and finally forming an integrated LED module. 


COB LED are categorized as front-mounted chip, flip chip, and semi-flip chip.

 

Advantages of COB


  Structural integration

COB directly packaging multiple bare chips on the substrate, the packaging is more efficient and simpler, the uniformity of integrated light emission helps to reduce moiré, provides a better solution for studio small pitch indoor LED display wall or stage LED display screen.


  Better light effect

The divergent beam emitted by Flip-Chip-on-Board LEDs provides high-intensity brightness and a larger light-emitting area. It can provide higher brightness and wide viewing angle more than 160° which is more suitable for applications like LED screen display for conference room, control room or led display video wall for monitor room.


  Stronger heat dissipation

The bare chip is in direct contact with the PCB substrate, and the heat can be quickly transferred to the substrate, which is more than 30% higher in heat dissipation efficiency than traditional LED panel display, reducing the light decay caused by high temperature. This is beneficial for lower display temperature, lower LED failure rate and better overall reliability of the LED display cabinet.


  High durability

The encapsulation glue covers the entire LED display board, without exposed LEDs, and has better protection against moisture, dust, static electricity, oxidation and blue light, suitable for frequent touch or dusty environments (such as rental LED display, LED poster display).


  Smaller pitch

Compared with the smallest pitch of SMD LED can only be 0.8mm, COB can achieve smaller pitch less than 0.4mm.


COB has become one of the mainstream technologies for high-end, high-definition digital LED display screen wall, and is also an important direction for future display technology upgrades.


Applications of COB LED
